Terraced Houses of London

From modest terraces on quiet streets to the grand palace-fronted rows of Belgravia and Regent’s Park, we have worked extensively on terraced houses across London and beyond. Often described as our bread and butter, these buildings remain endlessly fascinating. Despite their apparent uniformity, no two houses are ever the same, with subtle variations in layout, detailing and character.

This body of work spans all periods and scales, from Nash’s iconic terraces in Regent’s Park to the careful reworking of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian homes. Our projects typically involve extensions, roof additions, internal reconfiguration and contemporary insertions, alongside increasingly important retrofit measures that improve environmental performance while safeguarding significance.

What we did

We specialise in the refurbishment, extension and adaptation of historic terraced houses across London’s most prestigious neighbourhoods, including Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster, Camden and Islington. Our approach demonstrates how sensitive, well-considered interventions can preserve architectural character while meeting the practical demands of contemporary living.

Each project begins with a detailed assessment of the building’s history, development and heritage significance. Through archival research and the preparation of morphology and significance plans, we develop a clear understanding of how a house has evolved and which elements are most important to protect. This analysis informs every design decision, ensuring proposals are contextually appropriate and conservation-led.

We guide design teams in integrating contemporary interventions within historic fabric, striking a careful balance between preservation and change. We also provide specialist input into historically accurate detailing, whether reinstating lost features or designing new elements informed by historic precedent and clearly expressed as modern additions.

the outcome

Our work results in terraced houses that function comfortably for contemporary life while retaining their historic character and architectural integrity. Through careful research, sensitive design and a planning-led approach, we deliver robust schemes that are well received by local authorities and conservation officers.

The outcome is a portfolio of projects that demonstrate how London’s historic terraces can continue to evolve thoughtfully and sustainably, supporting long-term use and stewardship while respecting their heritage.
