Canada House, a Grade II listed Art Nouveau warehouse in Manchester, has been both our home and a long-term care project since 2016. Designed in 1909 for H. S. Booth & Company Ltd, it remains one of the city’s most distinctive Edwardian warehouses. We have worked closely with architects and craftspeople to repair, adapt and better understand the building — balancing its historic fabric with the needs of a contemporary workplace.

Our involvement began with heritage consultancy and design advice to revisit the building’s 1990s refurbishment, aiming to create flexible, comfortable workspaces within the historic fabric. We supported further listed building consents, including the repair and restoration of the terracotta façade. We collaborated with Shaws of Darwen to design new roof caps that maintain the original detail. We also secured consent for secondary glazing, improving environmental performance while preserving character.

Canada House continues as a lively, adaptable workplace rooted in its past. Its renewal demonstrates how careful repair and thoughtful design can sustain the spirit and craftsmanship of Manchester’s industrial buildings, keeping them part of the city’s working life today.
