Tarlair Lido

Tarlair Lido, a Grade A listed Art Deco swimming pool complex on the Aberdeenshire cliffs, has been restored through the sensitive refurbishment of its Tea Pavilion. Appointed in 2021, we provided conservation architectural and heritage services for the project. Planning and listed building consent were granted in 2022, and the pavilion reopened as a café in 2025, revitalising the site and celebrating the distinctive architectural and cultural heritage of this Scottish coastal landmark.

What we did

Our work combined conservation architectural services with heritage consultancy, enabling a holistic understanding of the site’s distinctive character. Detailed research informed a comprehensive Heritage Statement analysing the elements contributing to the Lido’s exceptional interest. As part of the commission, we conducted a condition survey that informed a RIBA Stage 4 schedule of repairs. Research and survey identified lost elements — including external balustrading and historic colour schemes — for reinstatement, restoring the Tea Pavilion as the architectural focal point of the site.

the outcome

The Tea Pavilion reopened as a café in March 2025, welcoming the public and revitalising the site. The refurbishment celebrates Tarlair Lido’s architectural heritage while reinforcing its status as a cherished Scottish coastal landmark.
